Lagos urges residents to embrace state’s initiative to own houses

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State Lateef Ibirogba, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, on Friday called on Lagos residents to take advantage of the state’s flexible housing initiative to own houses. Ibirogba told NAN that the Lagos Homes Ownership Mortgage Scheme provided residents with the opportunity to own houses irrespective of their social status.

Sterling Bank earns N48.7bn in six months

Yemi Adeola, Managing Director Sterling Bank Sterling Bank Plc on Friday declared gross earnings of N48.7 billion in its transactions in the half year, which ended on 30 June 2014. This was contained in a statement by the bank in Lagos. The earnings, according to the statement, represented a growth of 16.2 per cent when compared with N41.9 billion the bank earned in the corresponding period in 2013.

Suspect of Kaduna explosion targeted at Buhari arrested

The Defence Headquarters on Friday said that troops in Kaduna have arrested a man suspected to be connected with the explosion targeted at General Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday. The information was contained in a statement posted on Defence headquarters web site defenceinfo.mil.ng. The statement said that the young man was apprehended by military patrol team that swooped on the area immediately after the explosion. The statement said that he disguised as a woman clad in female garb to exude femininity with a brazier affixed to his chest. Buhari’s SUV after the attack by suspected terrorists “The suspect was arrested while trying to fizzle into a crowd of onlookers when the patrol team arrived the scene. “Youths in the area attempted to mob him while he was being arrested but were restrained by troops who quickly whisked him away in an armoured personnel carrier,” it explained. The statement said that he was currently being interrogated by security agencies

Army trains 67 NSCDC personnel on weapon handling

The Federal Road Safety Commission on Friday deployed 15,000 operatives and 800 patrol vehicles across the highways to ensure a free-flow of traffic throughout the Eid-el-Fitr celebration. The commission also deployed 60 patrol motorcycles, 52 ambulances and six heavy duty tow trucks on the highways.

Army trains 67 NSCDC personnel on weapon handling

The Nigerian Army on Friday completed a one-month training for 67 personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on weapon handling. NAN reports that the training, which started on 24 June ended on 25 July and was conducted at 146 Battalion, Eburutu Barracks, Calabar.

Briefing newsmen today, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Public Health, Dr Yewande Adeshina said the Liberian man being tested for the Ebola Virus is currently at a private hospital in Obalende, Lagos. She said the man has been isolated and the hospital vicinity cordoned off and that 30 other people are also being tested for possible contact with the deadly virus. Dr Adeshina warned residents to; “keep personal and environmental hygiene” and urged those who notice “strange feeling or symptoms similar to those of Ebola virus, which ranges from fever, headache, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, sore throat and joint pains, which are all symptoms of other ailments, to visit competent health facilities”.
